Why is it beneficial for the council to comply with the new Data Protection Act?

Develop strong processes

The new Data Protection Act will help us create good information governance in relation to the personal data that we handle and demonstrate to our customers that we value their privacy.

More efficient

The new Data Protection Act will help us to streamline processes, create efficiencies and save costs for example by reducing storage costs.

Privacy by Design

The elements such as Privacy by Design will help us to make sure that our operational processes are planned to:

  • respect the rights and privacy of our customers
  • avoid disruption
  • avoid damage to our reputation
  • drive the quality of the services we provide.

Better use of technology

The new Data Protection Act will allow us to make the best use of our technology to support the sharing of personal data. For example, using our encryption (secure email) function or secure file sharing system (presently the Objective EDRM System) will help support the privacy of the individual and the value of the information that we hold.

Fines

If we do not comply with the new Data Protection Act we can be fined up to €20 million or 4% of global annual turnover - a sum which would have a major impact on key services and the resources required to deliver them.
