Smarter travel resources and contacts

This page aims to provide web links, documents and classroom resources to help schools promote smarter travel to school. It also provides useful contacts within the council and partner organisations.

Sustrans resources - cycle and scoot to school

Sustrans offer a large range of classroom resources, guides and toolkits. Head to Sustrans - Working with teachers. Much of this is free and downloadable.

Sustrans produced a useful guide to increasing active travel in 6 weeks pdf icon Sustrans Increasing Active Travel to School Guide 2015 [2Mb].

The Big Pedal is an annual inter-school cycling and scooting challenge. It takes place in the Spring, and prizes are on offer to schools registering the most trips to school by active travel. In 2015, a number of West Lothian schools took part - .  It's easy to register and participate in, and provides a great opportunity to raise the profile of active travel amongst pupils and parents.

Living Streets resources - walk to school

Living Streets offer a Walk to School toolkit to schools (at a cost). Some schools are already registered on this walking travel tracker (Blackridge Primary School for example), and it is a great motivator to encourage pupils and their parents to walk to school. The council offered free participation in the Walk once a Week (WoW) programme in 2016 to all primary schools as part of the council's Smarter Choices Smarter Places programme, and Simpson Primary School in Bathgate are participating.

Hands Up Scotland Survey

Since 2008, Sustrans and Scottish local authorities have been carrying out an annual Hands Up Survey in nurseries, primary and secondary schools. Schools across Scotland complete the survey by asking their pupils 'How do you normally travel to school?'. The survey takes place in September each year, and results are published around May of the following year.

The Hands Up Survey is a valuable source of data for school travel plans. It is also important for monitoring progress on how schools, local authorities and the Scottish Government are doing on supporting smarter travel choices to school and nursery.
